A Retrospective Study on the Trauma Patients who Undergone Operation at Dongguk University Pohang and kyungiu Hospital in 1992






Abstract
Trauma is one of the leading causes of death according to sudustrialization , rapid in- crease of the motor vehicle and complexity of life. So, the purpose of our study was to under- stand the nature and the incidence of trauma which occured around our city relatively higher than other city and to cope with trauma adequately bases on it.
This study was undertaken retrospectively to analyze 1,046 traumatically injured patients who undergone operation at Dongguk university Pohang and Kyungju hospital from January I to December 31, 1992.
The results were as follows:
1) The traumata were common from age 30 to age 39, 23.0% of the patients. 78.4% of cases in male.
2) 63.1% of the cases were classified as ASA I, and 61.9% of surgeries were performed electively.
3) The majority of the causes of accident were blunt trauma in 87.0% of cases, on the otherhand, penetrating trauma comprised of 9.7%. The remainning 3.3% of cases were not revealed its exact mechanism of trauma.
4) The highest incidence of accidents were occured during l6: 00-23: 59 in 41.5% of cases.
5) The most common injury site was lower extremity in 41.9% of cases.
6) The greatest number of accidents were occured in May 9.9%, and on Sunday 14.3%.
7) 72.6% of cases were undergone orthopedic surgery.
8) In 76.4% of cases, it tooks 11 hours or more to reach the operation room after administration to the emergency room.
9) In 61.D% of cases, the operations were performed within 2 hours.
l0) An annual total of 4,506 operations which excluded cases of local anesthesia from count were consisted of 1,046 cases of trauma operation, 23.2% of total operation and 3,460 cases of non-trauma operation, 76.8%. The greatest number of total operations were highest in May, 30.3%.
11 ) Anesthesia was devided into general, regional and combined anesthesia, 43.6%, 55.1% and 1.3%, respectively.
12) Total number of postoperative death cases from trauma were 18 patient, that is, mortality rate was 1.7%. The majority of death cases, 77.7%. of total, were neurosurgical patient. And the most common cause of death was brain stem damage, 77.7% of total. The most common death age was 60-69, 27.7% of total. 88.8% of cases were died within 10 days after operation.
